Research Interests
I am interested in using combined genomics/genetics approaches to mapping novel mutations responsible for antibiotic resistance in S. aureus and other major pathogens. More recently, this strategy has evolved into experimental designs inspired by human genome-wide association studies (GWAS) using large numbers of case and control isolates taken from clinical studies. I have approach to develop models to predict vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA), a genetically complex phenotype. I believe the development of predictive models based on whole genome data is complementary and necessary for whole-genome based diagnostics Whole genome sequencing (either of pure cultures or metagenomics samples) will ultimately be a bridge between classical molecular genetic studies investigating the mechanisms of bacterial resistance and virulence, and clinical decision-making.
